After over nine months into its run, the film had earned 16x its debut weekend and ended up making a final gross of $285,761,243, the top-grossing film of its year in North America. The film is listed in the Guinness World Records as the highest-grossing live-action comedy ever and held the record until it was overtaken by The Hangover Part II in 2011. Hughes had asked Patrick Read Johnson to direct, but he was committed to directing Spaced Invaders. He turned to Chris Columbus, who had left National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation before shooting started because of a personality clash with starring actor Chevy Chase, who Columbus said treated him "like dirt". Hughes gave him the scripts for both Home Alone and Reach the Rock; Columbus chose to direct Home Alone, as he found it funnier and liked the Christmas theme. Columbus did an uncredited rewrite of the script, which included the character Old Man Marley.
Marv wanted to flee, but Harry suggested they investigate further, and wait to see someone exit the house, so they would be able identify him if they were questioned about the apparent murder. Later on, the two saw Kevin in the yard cutting down a tree, and realized they were scammed. “Angels With Dirty Faces” was praised by The New York Times after its debut, saying it was Cagney “at his best” in his role as the “swaggering little rowdy” that was Sullivan.

From the fake gangster movie "Angels with Dirty Faces", to Kevin McCallister's traps for the burglars, it is a fun holiday film that can anyone in the spirit of the season. Much like Die Hard 2, Home Alone 2 is a 90s sequel that places the same main character into the same kind of situation as the first movie and even has a line where they point that out. While Kevin didn't leave his house last time, he did accidentally separate himself from his whole family at Christmastime.
Home Alone 2 is a carbon copy, but it's also much better and more complex a movie than the first. In another mad rush to the airport the McCallisters make a point of remembering Kevin this time, but he gets lost in a crowd at the airport and follows a man who looks like his dad onto the wrong plane. Thirteen of the McCallisters are going to Miami for Xmas (do they never stay at home?) but Kevin is headed for the Big Apple, and he's going to have that once-in-a-lifetime vacation he's been wishing for. Kevin watched Angels with Filthy Souls and was startled by Johnny's death, pausing the film and calling for mother. Malcolm McDowell, Jaime King and Donal Logue star in the film about a murderous Santa who picks off people one by one. Lauren (she/her) is the digital content director of the Hearst Lifestyle Group, where she oversees online content and strategy for Good Housekeeping, Woman's Day and other Hearst titles, including SEO, video, social media and e-commerce efforts.
“Merry Christmas Ya Filthy Animal… And A Happy New Year."
Kevin berates his mother for allowing the rest of the family to pick on him and wishes that his family would disappear. During the night, heavy winds create a power outage, disabling the alarm clocks and causing the family to oversleep. In the confusion and rush to get to the airport, Kevin is accidentally left behind.
In December 2015, Culkin reprised his role as an adult Kevin McCallister in the inaugural episode of the Jack Dishel web series, "DRYVRS", where a visibly disturbed Kevin recounts his experience of being left home alone by his family. In response to Culkin's video, Daniel Stern appeared in a short video reprising his role as Marv, released in conjunction with Stern's Reddit AMA, where he pleads for Harry to return to help protect him against Kevin's traps. It was praised for its quotable phrases, morals, traps, and main character.

Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian gave the film three out of five and praised Culkin's "vivid screen presence, almost incandescent with confidence". However, he criticised his acting, calling it "a bit broad and mannered". Ali Barclay of the BBC wrote "Culkin walks a fine line between annoyance and endearment throughout the film." He also called Home Alone "a film which manages to capture some of the best qualities of Christmas". Home Alone grossed $285.8 million in the United States and Canada and $190.9 million in other countries for a worldwide total of $476.7 million, against a production budget of $18 million.

Harry is trying to express that nobody would catch them because nobody would believe anybody would rob a toy store on Christmas Eve. Marv, however, doesn't understand the expression and claims they are both dumb enough to do the deed. The two have a heart-to-heart chat as they're first really getting to know one another and Kevin drops this pearl of wisdom on her when she talks about closing off her heart for fear of being rejected. It's one of the great quotes from the Home Alone franchise that remind the audience that Kevin can sometimes be wise beyond his years.
The True Story Behind 'Angels With Filthy Souls,' the Fake Gangster Movie in 'Home Alone'
So after he realizes that's what he's done again when he arrives in New York, he gives the same shocked reaction before slowly realizing the potential for a fun vacation away from his relatives. On December 19, 2018, Culkin would once again reprise his role as an adult Kevin McCallister in a 60-second advertisement for Google Assistant, titled Home Alone Again. The commercial contains shot for shot remakes of scenes from the film. Google Assistant helps Kevin set up the house to look active by remotely turning on lights, devices, and setting up cutouts of people, to have the thieves parked in a van outside steer clear of the house. Additionally, Joe Pesci also reprised his role as Harry, only for his voice making a small cameo. Pesci later appeared in another ad where he watches the short with his friends and jokes about his brief cameo.

Kevin tricks them into thinking that his family is still home, forcing them to postpone their plans to rob the McCallister house. Hughes conceived Home Alone while on vacation, with Warner Bros. being originally intended to finance and distribute the film. However, Warner Bros. shut down production after it exceeded its assigned budget.
She has almost 20 years of experience writing and editing beauty, lifestyle, home, health, entertainment and product review content. There doesn't seem to be a problem that Kevin can't figure out how to get out of. This cartoonish Christmas fantasy is what makes people love the Home Alone movies so much. Even though he's not the actor saying it, Tim Curry is the person who really makes this line work as his character believes that he's the one being accused of the smooching. Part of the fun of the original Home Alone is the childish fantasy of having a lack of supervision with no real care for long-term consequences.
Traditional Christmas songs, such as "O Holy Night" and "Carol of the Bells", are featured prominently in the film, as well as the film's theme song "Somewhere in My Memory". The soundtrack was released by Sony Classical Records on cassette on December 4, 1990, and on CD on May 27, 2015. John Candy was available for only one day to film his scenes, which took 23 hours to shoot. In return, he was the only actor Hughes allowed to go off-script; according to Columbus, all his dialogue was improvised. Hughes suggested to Columbus that they cast Macaulay Culkin as Kevin, because of his experience while shooting Uncle Buck.
It's the comedic timing and the nonchalant delivery that makes this line funny. After getting off the plane, Kevin's family slowly begins to realize he's not there after they tried to pass him his bag and noticed he is missing. There are a lot of funny quotes from Home Alone 2, and it can be easy to forget that there is quite a heartfelt center to the movie in the form of the Pigeon Lady, who befriends Kevin throughout the story.

Macaulay Culkin was paid $4.5 million to star in this movie, the biggest salary ever to an eleven-year-old child actor. Later, while Kevin paid for his cheese pizza, he fast-forwarded through Snakes' parts in order to use Johnny's speaking voice to communicate with the pizza man. He later used the scene where Johnny killed Snakes to deter burglar Marv Murchins, lighting firecrackers to accompany the film's gunfire. After running away, Marv apparently recognized Johnny's voice and told Harry that " sounded like a snake". Snakes was a character from the film Angels with Filthy Souls and its remake. A second remake of a 1974 Canadian film, starring Imogen Poots, Aleyse Shannon, Lily Donoghue and Brittany O'Grady, this slasher film about sorority sisters fighting off a stalker takes a stab at feminist themes.
Even Macaulay Culkin himself admitted he didn't realize the truth as a kid. Even Macaulay Culkin admitted he didn't know if the movie-within-a-movie was real. Foody also played "Det. Cragie", the alcoholic and the negligent Chicago cop in Code of Silence, as well as the police dispatcher in The Blues Brothers. He was also known for his incredible wit and was often referred to as "The Witster" on set.
